A Day in the Studio: Crafting Durable, Hand-Poured Cement Candle Jars

Crafting our cement candle jars is an involved, careful process that ensures each jar is sturdy and stylish for candles and then as a reusable home decor piece. Here’s a glimpse into a day in the studio creating these durable, hand-poured jars:

• Starting with Clean Molds: We begin by washing the molds to ensure a smooth, clean finish on each jar. Clean molds help prevent imperfections, setting the foundation for a quality jar.

  
  

• Cement Station Prep: Next, it’s time to mix up the cement! Depending on the jar color, we create a specific blend recipe, adding pigments for natural, earthy tones. Safety is key—so with eyewear, gloves, and a facemask on, we’re ready to get started.

  
  

• Blending Cement and Pigment: To get a smooth, flawless mixture, we add reverse osmosis, filtered water as needed and blend the cement and pigment until it’s fully incorporated, ensuring a uniform look with no lumps for each jar. This part involves moving quickly but carefully as to not bubble the mixture.

  
  

• Pouring and De-bubbling: Once blended, we pour the cement mixture into the molds slowly. A gentle but thorough tapping ensures air bubbles are released, resulting in a dense, solid jar that’s built to last.

  
  

• Curing Process: The poured jars sit in the molds for a minimum of 4 hours to begin their initial cure.

  
  

• Demolding and Smoothing: After curing, we demold and sand the bottoms for a smooth, balanced surface. Then, each jar is submerged in water for 24 hours to further strengthen the cement, ensuring it’s ready to handle future uses.

  
  

• Drying and Final Sealing: After wiping the jars clean, they air dry for 5 days, followed by sealing with a safe, non-toxic cement sealer. This sealing process adds an extra layer of protection, enhancing both durability and the jar’s visual appeal. The jars then dry for an additional 2 days to lock in the sealer.
