How to Avoid Candle Tunneling: Get a Smooth, Even Burn Every Time

Updated: Oct 27, 2024

Burning Candle

Tunneling is a common issue that can leave you with wasted wax and a candle that burns unevenly. But with a few simple practices, you can avoid this and enjoy a beautiful, even burn from start to finish. Here’s what you need to know:

  1. The First Burn: The most critical burn is the first one. Let your candle burn for at least 3-4 hours, or until the melted wax pool reaches the edges of the container. This sets a “memory” and helps prevent tunneling in future burns.

  2. Wick Maintenance: Keeping your wick trimmed to about 1/4 inch reduces soot and ensures a steady flame. It also prevents the flame from getting too hot, which can lead to uneven burning.

  3. Draft-Free Zone: Avoid burning your candle in drafty areas, as air movement can cause the flame to flicker and burn unevenly.

Following these simple tips can help you enjoy every ounce of your candle’s wax and fragrance, giving you the perfect burn each time you light it. An extra plus is having a clean empty jar to reuse once the candle is finished!
