DIY Wax Melts: Turn Leftover Candle Wax into Fragrant Melts

DIY Wax Melts

Upcycling Leftover Candle Wax

There’s something satisfying about getting every last bit out of a favorite candle, especially when the scent has become a part of your home. So, what do you do when your candle is too low to light? Enter DIY wax melts! They’re an eco-friendly way to repurpose wax remnants, giving you more of your favorite scent while reducing waste. Plus, they’re super easy to make and customizable with whatever molds you have on hand.

Getting Started: Supplies You’ll Need

For this DIY, you’ll need your leftover candle wax, a double boiler (or a heatproof bowl over a pot of boiling water), silicone molds (think mini muffin trays or fun-shaped candy molds), and any added scents or dried herbs you’d like. Safety tip: be sure to work in a ventilated area and avoid open flames near melted wax.

Step-by-Step: How to Make Wax Melts

  1. Remove the Wick: Gently scrape out any wick remnants from the old candle. You want clean wax for this project.

  2. Melt the Wax: Once you've scooped out what wax you can, use a double boiler to melt the wax slowly, avoiding overheating.

  3. Add Extra Fragrance (Optional): If you want a stronger scent, add a few drops of essential oil.

Tip: Try to match essential oils with notes of the candle scent for a seamless blend.

  4. Pour into Molds: Carefully pour the melted wax into your silicone molds. Add dried flowers or herbs for extra flair.

  5. Cool and Pop Out: Let the wax cool and harden completely (1-2 hours). Once solid, pop your wax melts out of the molds.

Using Your DIY Wax Melts

Pop a wax melt in a wax warmer or burner, and enjoy your upcycled scent! It’s a simple, sustainable way to enjoy your candles down to the last drop, and they make cute gifts or personal treats for any wax lover.

DIY Wax Melt Method for Busy Bodies

For those that are on the busy side of life but still don't want the left over wax to go to waste, here are some simpler alternatives:

  1. Scoop Directly from the Jar: Removing what wax you can from the jar and simply popping it directly on the wax warmer works just as great minus the pretty mold shapes!

  2. Melt in the BiirCo Jar: If you've purchased a BiirCo Candle, good news! You can heat your concrete vessels without having to scoop out the wax at all. Be sure to remove the labels from the jar prior to heating. I use a toaster oven or conventional oven at 150 degrees Fahrenheit (or less), place the jar in and wait until the wax melts. Once melted, you can pour directly into molds or the wax warmer itself.
